In short: laxatives are medicines. Used occasionally and on medical advice they can help, but taken for months or years they risk creating a vicious circle: the bowel gets used to them, the dose goes up and constipation gets worse. Here you will find the types of laxatives and their effects, why the habit forms and a gradual plan, to agree with your doctor, to get back to emptying more naturally.
Laxatives are medicines
Using laxatives without medical advice is very common. Some people even take them to "lose weight": they don't work that way, and overuse can harm your health.
Types of laxatives and their side effects
| Type | How they work | Examples | Possible side effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk-forming | Increase stool volume by drawing in water | Bran, flaxseed, agar-agar | Bloating, wind; rarely blockage if you drink too little |
| Stimulant | Increase bowel movements | Anthraquinones (senna, aloe, rhubarb), bisacodyl, castor oil | Cramps, diarrhoea, abdominal pain |
| Softeners | Soften stools | Glycerin, liquid paraffin | Reduced absorption of some vitamins and minerals |
| Osmotic | Hold water in the colon | Lactulose, magnesium salts, macrogol | Mineral imbalances with long-term use |
Why dependence develops
A laxative, especially a stimulant one, empties much of the colon, not just the last part. It then takes a few days to build up enough material for a natural bowel movement. During those days you feel "blocked", take the laxative again and the cycle starts over.
Long-term use can lead to:
- diarrhoea and abdominal cramps;
- an increasingly lazy bowel and worse constipation;
- dark discolouration of the colon wall (pseudomelanosis);
- low potassium and other imbalances, with possible effects on the kidneys.
How to stop: a gradual plan
Never stop a prescribed laxative suddenly without talking to your doctor. The plan usually includes these steps:
- Talk to your doctor, who will assess your type of constipation and the medicines you take.
- Reduce the dose or frequency gradually, following their advice.
- Strengthen the basics: water throughout the day, fibre increased little by little, daily movement.
- Set a regular time to go, for example after breakfast, and don't put off the urge.
- Use a footstool on the toilet to make emptying easier.

Intestinal washing as a drug-free alternative
An intestinal wash uses only water: it softens stools and helps you empty without active ingredients. That is why many people choose it while cutting down on laxatives, always in agreement with their doctor.
The Bio Fluff home device connects to your bathroom tap and lets you wash while seated on the toilet, on your own. Water enters through a soft single-use speculum. A session takes about 10 minutes, but you can take all the time you need. Afterwards you throw away the speculum and clean the seat.
Before starting, read the contraindications. To see how it differs from an enema, read enema or colon hydrotherapy?.
When to see a doctor straight away
- blood in the stool, unintended weight loss, fever;
- severe abdominal pain or vomiting;
- constipation that started recently for no clear reason;
- cramps or muscle weakness while using laxatives (possible low potassium).
Frequently asked questions
Are "natural" laxatives harmless?
No. Senna, aloe and rhubarb are stimulant laxatives: even though they come from plants, long-term use can cause the same problems as other laxatives.
How long does it take to stop?
It depends on the person, the type of laxative and how long it has been used. Your doctor can help you set realistic timings.
Does intestinal washing become a habit?
It uses only water and does not act like a stimulant medicine. It is still best to decide how often to use it with your doctor.
